Normal Weight Obesity: Exercise is Key
By: Jeff    on 1/25/2010
We all know that America is leading the world in obesity. You can see the super-sized problem every time you walk through a mall or down a street. Waistlines are expanding and keeping our doctors quite busy as this condition progresses into a variety of illnesses including heart disease and diabetes.

However, there’s a whole other class of individual out there who looks like he or she is of average build and who weighs in right around the normal mark on the body mass index chart. Researchers have found that thirty percent of women with a normal weight according to BMI actually have a dangerously high body fat level. Likewise they found that around twenty percent of men fall into this category now labeled as Normal Weight Obesity.

Body mass index has never been considered a good indicator of health in an individual, but rather it helps quantify health risks in a large population. Or that’s the theory. It seems that body mass index doesn’t really help in populations either because those who are normal weight obese have a normal BMI and the same health risks as a person with a BMI labeling them as obese.

The bottom line is simple. Weight is meaningless. Those who are lean and muscular tend to be heavier and healthier than those of similar shape who carry a lot of bodyfat. You need to worry about your body fat percentage and not your actual weight.

If you’re looking for an easy method of assessing your current situation and creating goals, then I suggest you try my Three Weeks to Thrive weight loss program. The first day of the program will educate you on body fat loss versus weight loss and help you complete a self assessment and goal setting workbook. The next 20 days of the program will make sure you fulfill those goals.
