Well there are not a lot of positive things to say about the food manufacturing industry today, except that it has kept us alive. We certainly could be in better health if food manufacturers weren’t as concerned with stuffing more and more cheap, empty calories into our food, so we can stuff more and more cash into their pockets.
But! One thing has begun to change… the ubiquitous use of trans fats by restaurants and food manufacturers is finally beginning to decline.
Thanks to public awareness raised in large part by the folks who sued Kraft over the Oreo Cookies (you can find out about them at BanTransFats.com. Several cities are beginning to ban these dangerous oils in restaurants as well.
The transition is happening, but not as fast as it could be.
So I urge you to make a solid effort to go trans fat free. Examine the nutrition labels and avoid anything with hydrogenated oil in the ingredient list, even if the label says there’s 0g of trans fat. There still could be up to .49g per serving of trans fat in that product.
If the foods you like still have trans fat, write to the manufacturers… tell them you want to buy their products but you won’t do it until they release a version that’s fully trans fat free.
Consumption of trans fats is one of the most significant risk factors for coronary heart disease. And that’s just the beginning of the health risks.
