The FitDaily Approach

FitDaily is all about keeping you motivated for a healthy lifestyle. We cater to those at an average fitness level who are committed to improving their bodies. Because we focus primarily on building core strength and improving overall athletic performance, some of our exercises may appear complex at first. Take the time to learn to do them right, or if you can, get a personal trainer to help you learn them at first. We try to incorporate only exercises you can do at home with a minimal set of equipment. The equipment set is described below.

We provide you with daily routines as well as tools to track and compare your progress along the way. Visit us each and every day and push yourself to do the workouts to the best of your abilities. If you can do that, you will get into better shape. But remember, only you know your true limits. Make sure you are comfortable with everything you undertake. On the other hand, if our workouts are too easy for your fitness level, feel free to add more. You'll note that we don't do a lot of classic strength or power training here, so that may be one place to start. For that you'll need access to free weights.

How to Use FitDaily.Com Effectively

The steps are very simple:

  1. Check the site on a daily basis to see what your workout is.
  2. Take the time to learn all of the exercises as they come up. If you find a new exercise in your workout, spend a few minutes practicing it to be sure you have the form correct.
  3. Perform your workout every day to the best of your abilities. You may need to adapt or make changes, skip certain exercises, do additional exercises, or even swap the days you rest and workout. All of that is fine. Just make sure you make the effort on a daily basis.
  4. Record your progress using our progress tracking. This is essential in order to see the gains you've made.
  5. Add new activities to your schedule to keep your lifestyle more active. For some tips look here
  6. If you have trouble customizing your workouts or you need extra motivation or assistance, consider upgrading your membership to the FitDaily Complete membership. You'll get assistance and advice from a live trainer, access to premium content, and no more ads. Click here to learn more about membership upgrades.

Exercise Equipment

Everything you need for our workouts can be obtained online or from a local fitness retailer. You should be able to get the basic set of equipment for under $100 in most cases. Here is what you need:

  1. At least 2 long resistance bands of appropriate tension for your fitness/strength level. One should be fairly low resistance and one fairly heavy.
  2. At least 1 short resistance band of appropriate tension for your fitness/strength level. A figure-8 type band will work well.
  3. A jump rope. Any jump rope will do, but try to get one made of quality material or you may find it more difficult to use.
  4. A 6" diameter foam roller. Ideally one that is full round and 12-36" in length, but other sizes will work as well.
  5. A balance ball (stability ball) of appropriate size for your height. Most adults will use 45-65cm balance balls. Those 5' and under should use a 45cm, those under 5'8" should use a 55cm, and those 5'8" and over should use a 65cm. If you are exceptionally tall (6'3" or more) you might opt for a 75cm ball. Children or those under 4'6" might want to try a 30-35cm ball.

The following is some optional equipment you might consider. It is listed in the order of important for use on this site:

  1. Additional stretch bands for varying levels of resistance.
  2. Adjustable dumbbells. You won't need a lot of weight, so a standard set is probably fine for starters.
  3. A step or low bench to stand on.
  4. A pullup bar. If you can use a heavy tree branch or a piece of playground equipment, that's great (make sure you take precautions with either of those), but if not you might consider an adjustable pullup bar that goes inside a doorway.
  5. A heart rate monitor for maintaining your heart rate during cardio exercise.
  6. A medicine ball.
  7. A rowing machine.
  8. A complete free weight set with bench/squat rack, or access to this equipment at a gym.
  9. An elipitical machine, or access to one at a gym.

Gym Equipment

Part of the purpose of FitDaily is to give you an inexpensive option that does not require belonging to a gym. However, we should also mention that a gym is a great solution to your equipment needs. You can easily substitute light weight on a cable machine for anything that requires a resistance band, or you can use dumbbells. Many gyms have balance balls, jump ropes, and even foam rollers on hand if you need them. Additionally, they provide an atmosphere that keeps your mind thinking about your workout without the interuptions of home. Also, your equipment will wear out. Balance balls especially need to be taken care of so they don't rupture (household pets with claws tend to damage them).

Many people join gyms just for the treadmills and bikes. Without sounding overly negative about these machines, people put too much faith in them to do their workout for them. If you're joining a gym, find a place with a variety of equipment, not just treadmills and bikes. Look for rowing machines (Concept 2 or similar) and other equipment that will keep your workouts interesting. If you use these machines, make sure you pay attention to your workout. Don't get so distracted in a book or television show that you lose the proper pace or heart rate.

Nutrition

Daily nutrition is a key element of overall fitness. At this time the FitDaily nutritional element is under construction. We are planning to have a nutritionist or registered dietician on staff and we will offer general nutrition advice on a daily basis with our workouts. For the time being you can find some general information on our nutritional approach in our library.
