Body Mass Index is a quick way to roughly approximate your body fat using only
your height and weight. This works for adult men and women. BMI is an imprecise
measurement because it cannot take into account how muscular a person is. It
does allow a person to compare their BMI to the general or average population,
and the calculation is simple. The overall correlation between body fat levels
and BMI is fairly strong, though it varies by sex, race, and age.
A few variations include:
-
At the same BMI, women tend to have more body fat than men.
-
At the same BMI, older people, on average, tend to have more body fat than
younger adults.
-
Highly trained athletes may have a high BMI because of increased muscularity
rather than increased body levels.
More accurate methods of measuring body fat include skinfold caliper tests,
underwater weighing, and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
